Upbringing.

Crystal Waters

// A rainbow arches over the crystal waters and into an abandoned barn where raccoons hold congregation. Here my brother and I are handed days the length of summer. We wander and explore with mischief. Magic seeps over the grasses. In the gold of afternoon, traveling fleets of Monarch wink like petals through the understory. Giggling, we leap and paw at them, our hands clapping like bear traps. I make a catch! Hands cupping a flurry of fumbling velvet, I race over to him with wide-eyed intent.  His eyes meet my hands and I nod affirming. Honey stillness. Fingers uncurling, palms spread wide in offering. Instantly, marmalade wings flash forth- strong as breath, rippling the sea of child mind. //  -word painting of a childhood memory
